Update to the addendum to "In Search of the Turkey Foot Road" (posted September 2015)
Click here for the Sept. 20, 2015 update to Addendum A of the fourth edition of the book "In Search of the Turkey Foot Road". This addendum is updated periodically to provide corrections and supplemental material. The most significant aspect of this update is improved delineation of the 1779 military route, based on 1780 property-related documents that reference the route in Fayette and Westmoreland counties. This new evidence shows that the military route passed through the Pleasant Valley Country Club in Fayette County, and crossed Route 31 at Ruffs Dale. The Ruffs Dale evidence helps to explain why the Jacobs Creek fording site that Judge Veech described is so far west. The location of the Woodrow farm, along the Turkey Foot Road in Westmoreland County, is also identified.

The final edition of the “In Search of the Turkey Foot Road” book (posted August 2014)
I’m pleased to announce a new edition of the book “In Search of the Turkey Foot Road”. When our country was young, this early route crossed the mountain barrier between Fort Cumberland, Maryland and what would eventually become Mount Pleasant, Pennsylvania. The book conclusively proves that this legendary road was cut in 1779 as a military supply road to Fort Pitt in support of a major campaign. The reason why it was cut through the environs of present-day Salisbury and Confluence, Pennsylvania is explained, the various individuals who were involved in establishing the road are identified, and the route is delineated with maps and GPS coordinates. Documentary evidence shows that the antecedent to the eastern part of the road was an Indian and packer’s path. The book also provides considerable information on the pioneers who settled along the route.

This fourth edition represents five years of intense research, and is the final edition. As such, it closes a busy chapter of my life, and represents an interesting new chapter in the history of Fort Pitt and several counties along the Mason-Dixon line. The book has 562 pages, and contains 70% more information than the previous edition. The 1000+ figures and appendices are provided on a companion DVD. For an overview, click here. To order, click here. The cost is $40.00, plus shipping. All proceeds benefit the Mount Savage Historical Society.

Smoke and mirrors, Chicago style (posted June 2011)
We've all seen the editorials about needing to do something about our border gun stores arming Mexican drug cartels. It's all BS. Click Here to read a June 14, 2011 Congressional Joint Staff Report about the United States federal government intentionally permitting thousands of guns to be illegally sold to Mexican criminals. This is our own government facilitating illegal gun sales, then using those sales as a pretext to campaign for more restrictive gun laws. This, my friends, has all the hallmarks of Chicago style politics. The program was initiated in the fall of 2009 (Obama's first year of office), and Obama picked the guys running the DOJ and ATF. That same year, Obama and his political appointees were out in force saying the increase in Mexican violence was caused by America's lax gun laws. Hmmm...what a coincidence.

If you don't believe the report, believe me. Long before the story broke in the media, I overheard Texas gun store employees complaining that when they telephoned the ATF about suspected gunrunners trying to buy multiple guns, the ATF told them to go ahead and sell the guns. This ain't real hard to figure out, folks. Somebody at the upper levels of the federal government hatched a plan to allow guns to flow to Mexican drug cartels so they could use the gun traffic and ensuing violence as a pretext to restrict gun ownership by US citizens.

A number of books about Somerset County were hastily published to take advantage of the sudden interest that was caused by the September 11, 2001 crash of United Airlines Flight 93 near Shanksville, and the July 28, 2002 Quecreek mine rescue. In my opinion, some of these books contain striking historical inaccuracies, and for this reason people should not blindly rely upon such books. Please verify information by reference to original sources, before relying upon it.

Triangular lath suggests an early house construction date (posted July 2007, revised July 2007)

The discovery of triangular lath on the house on the Michael Korns, Sr. homestead suggests an early construction date. The photograph also reveals more reciprocating sawmill marks on core structural lumber. The photograph shows triangular lath and crude plaster on one wall, and sawn lath and more modern plaster on another wall of the same room, which suggests that part of the plaster was replaced during a remodeling job well after the house was originally built. Reasearch on plaster construction suggests that the triangular lath was placed too close together to assure mechanical interlocking with the plaster, and much of it had to be replaced at a later date.

Reciprocating saw marks found on lumber from the house on the Michael Korns, Sr. farm (posted July 2007, revised July 2007)

The Michael Korns, Sr. Farm Photo Index web page has a number of new pictures, including pictures that prove that the house was built during the age of the reciprocating saw mill. Most of the previous farm and house-related pictures have been replaced with new, higher quality scans for improved clarity.
