This 2008 photo of a reproduction of a split rail fence was taken at the Historical and Genealogical Society of Somerset County. Remnants of such fences were still common in Pennsylvania in the 1950's and 1960's. I have clear childhood recollections of them from visits to the Southampton Township, Somerset County farm of my grandfather Allen Lester Korns. I also remember seeing them in Mercer County, where we local boys used the rails (with the farmer's permission) to build a small cabin to camp in.
