Ephriam Geiger's powder horn and hunting bag

The following photo shows a hunting bag and powder horn that at one time belonged to Ephriam Geiger (1859-1919) of Larimer Township, Somerset County, Pennsylvania. He was the brother of Mary E. (Geiger) Korns, who married John Wilson Korns. The rifle, powder horn, and bag were left in the house when Ephriam & Mary's farm was sold after his death. The bag and horn may have been sold with the rifle by J.H. Johnston's Great Western Gun Works of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

A catalog from that firm indicates that at one time they did sell a similar rifle as a set with the horn and bag. Notice that the bag, which has two compartments, was tanned with the hair intact. Also observe that the shoulder strap was divided into thinner straps to hold the horn, and the weight of the horn would have held the flap of the bag shut. I donated the hunting bag and powder horn to the Fort Bedford Museum.

The following photos show details of the powder horn. It has a lathe-turned plug and a threaded spout, and also has staples for receiving the leather straps of the hunting bag. The lathe-turned plug and threaded spout show that the powder horn was a commercially made item, rather than farm-made.
