The following vintage photos, which were provided by Mike McKenzie, are from a cache of railroad-related photos that was rescued from some Cumberland, Maryland area trash years ago by one of Mike's friends.
The first photo (below) shows the front of the “Western Maryland Railway Co. Freight Station” in Cumberland. Based on the vintage of the parked cars, I estimate that the photo was taken in the late 1950s. The church steeples visible in the background are those of the Emmanuel Episcopal Church and the First Presbyterian Church, which are both on Washington Street.
The following photo provides a mid 1900s view of rows of boxcars spotted on team tracks along the rear of the long Western Maryland Railway Co. Freight Station building. Workers are loading and unloading cargo, capturing the bustle of 1950s rail commerce and manual freight handling. Pickup trucks are parked on a wooden platform, and in the distance a worker is pushing a hand truck. A piece of construction equipment is setting on a platform that is aligned with one set of tracks, and a woman in a long coat is surveying the scene at the bottom of the photo.
The following map, which is is from the 1956 edition of the Sanborn "Insurance Maps of Cumberland Maryland," shows the location of the freight station on South Market Street.
