A detailed history of the church is provided on pages 108 to 113 of the 1940 book "Pastors and People of Somerset Classis". Some of the founding highlights are:

  • The congregation began in 1836 in Edie, at the Rhodes school house.
  • The congregation was gathered together at the school by Rev. H. G. Ibbeken.
  • Land for the church was donated by Abraham Beam.
  • The first church building was a frame structure.
  • Rev. H. G. Ibbeken died on February 8, 1844.
  • The next pastor was William Conrad, from Berlin, who reportedly appears to have effected the formal organization of the church in 1844.
  • The brick church building was dedicated on September 7, 1873.

According to the July 25, 1888 issue of the "Reformed Church Messenger", "The Somerset Classis held its seventeenth annual meeting in the Beam Reformed church, in the Beam charge, in Somerset county, Pa., Rev. Isaiah N. Burger, pastor; beginning on Wednesday evening at 7:45 o'clock, May 23, 1888, and ending on the following Saturday evening, at 8 o'clock."
