Introduction: This project includes individuals who may have been incorrectly identified as a gunsmith who worked within the present bounds of Somerset and Bedford counties. They were included so that potentially incorrect assertions can be scrutinized. As described below, two publications include Amos Border as an old-time Bedford County, Pennsylvania gunsmith. I suspect the publications are wrong.
1843: Kauffman's 1952 book "Early American Gunsmiths 1650-1850" indicates that Amos Border is identified as a gunsmith in an 1843 Bedford Township, Bedford County tax list, but makes no mention of the gunsmith Enos Border. Kauffman's 1960 book "The Pennsylvania - Kentucky Rifle" indicates that Enos Border is identified as a gunsmith in an 1843 Bedford Township, Bedford County tax list, but makes no mention of the Amos Border. Based on this, I suspect Kauffman accidentally referred to Enos as Amos when writing the 1952 book.
1843-1851: In his 1953 book "American Firearms Makers", A. Merwyn Carey indicates that Daniel Border and his brother Amos Border were gunmakers in Bedford Township of Bedford County, Pennsylvania who produced Kentucky rifles with percussion ignition in the 1843 to 1851 timeframe. I suspect that these references to Amos Border are based on a misinterpretation of locks that are marked with the last names of John Amos and one of the Border family members who John Amos was related to by marriage, such as (and probably) his nephew Daniel Border.
Perhaps tellingly, the 2008 edition of Sellers' compendium "American Gunsmiths" does not include an entry for a gunsmith named Amos Border. So far, I haven't found information about any individual named Amos Border who lived in Bedford County, Pennsylvania in the 1843 to 1851 timeframe.
