Korns family memorial stone

This stone, which marks the burial site of Catherine B. Korns, also lists the names of three of her siblings who died in childhood and are buried in Somerset County, Pennsylvania. A single stone is used to mark the burial site of those three children at the little Rivers (Reiber) Cemetery in Somerset County, Pennsylvania.

Catherine's newspaper obituary reads as follows:

OBITUARY.
KORNS

Catherine B. Korns was born at Pleasant Union, Somerset county, Pa., on March 9, 1845, and died at the home of her niece Mrs. Minnie Hadley, in Grinnell, Iowa, March 6, 1907.

She was the second child of Jacob and Elizabeth Korns. In the spring of 1857 she removed with her parents to Carnsforth, Poweshiek county, Iowa, and a year later to Highland township, Tama county, Iowa, on the farm that has been her home ever since. Her mother died November 25, 1887, and she has been a faithful and devoted daughter, a kind and loving sister, and more than aunt to an orphaned niece, and a loyal, true friend to those about her. She knew all the trials and hardships of the pioneer days, and was brave to defend the right. She was ever extending love and sympathy to those who were weaker, and in need of friendship. She did not live for herself alone, she was always planning for the welfare of others. Her last illness began with an attack of grippe, which seemed to weaken her more than we realized. She rallied somewhat, and went to visit her niece where she suffered a relapse which terminated in pneumonia. This sad day for all of us was the 62nd anniversary of her birth.

She leaves to mourn her loss an aged father of 90 years, an only sister, two nieces and a nephew. Her mother, brother and three sisters preceded her to the better land.

The funeral was held at 10 o’clock Saturday afternoon, services being conducted at the late home of the deceased, four miles east of Gilman, by Rev. W. W. Woodrow, Presbyterian minister of Grinnell. A large number of friends were present to pay their respects to the departed one, and the floral offerings were profuse and beautiful. Those from a distance who attended the funeral were Jacob Korns, Ed Korns, Mesdames Braiden Campbell and Perry Shively of Marshalltown; E. J. Hadley and family; L. Whelan and wife, Grinnell; Mrs. C. A. Ratcliff, New Sharon.
