The photo below, which was taken by Michael McKenzie in 2009, shows two things. In the foreground, it shows the remains of a railroad-related foot bridge across Jennings Run, near Barrelville, Maryland. In the background, a set of stairs is shown that goes up the hillside to the old junction of the C&P Railroad and the branch railroad to Wellersburg, PA. For a 1939 aerial view of the junction, click here. In the aerial photo, the foot bridge is shown on the EAST side of the trestle. The foot bridge and steps shown below are located on the WEST side of the trestle, and we believe that they must be a later installation.
In 2010, Colen Kennell provided more information on the bridge, writing "I have some additional information regarding the photo of the remains of the footbridge at Barrelville on your website. It is relatively modern, having been built when the new part of Rt 36 was built below Barrelville, about 1960. Jennings Run was shifted closer to the C&O roadway at the same time. The bridge supports were steel beams with wood planking. It was washed away in the bad flood a few years back. My family lived above the bridge and my brothers & I used the bridge to catch the school bus. We also used the old bridge before then to get to the bus stop at Caler's Store (a lure for us to spend our meager cash on penny candy - a 1" by 2" piece of fudge for a nickel seems like a bargin today, but was a big deal then) as well as the baseball diamond, Presbyterian Church, and our grandparents house. The older bridge was a log & plank affair that was closer to the store and closer to the water, but it did manage to survive previous floods. A path led from the bridge to the C&O."
