If the following news article is correct, then I misunderstood a story my parents told me in 1958, when I was four years old. On page 15 of "In the Land of Used to Be" I wrote that my four-year-old cousin Deena was struck and dragged by a car in front of the E.U.B. Church her family attended in Wellersburg, Pennsylvania. The following newspaper article from the Monday, March 24, 1958 edition of the “Cumberland Evening Times” reports that the accident occurred four miles south of Hyndman on Route 96. That description seems to put the accident at a little country church about 0.8-miles from the home of Deena’s maternal grandparents, and about 8.5-miles away from the Wellersburg E.U.B. Church. Deena survived the accident, and went on to become a Nurse at the Cumberland hospital. L. Dietle, December 26, 2024.
