This 1999 photograph of the old farmhouse on the Michael Korns, Sr. Somerset County, PA homestead shows a hand-hewn beam resting on the foundation which is cut with rectangular slots to receive the ends of the first story floor beams. (The floor beams at this location have rotted away and dropped down to the ground.) Also note that the log beam and the thick board above the basement window are hand-hewn.
Note the chair rail on the first story wall.
