Wooden bars on the basement windows

bars on a basement window on the old house on the Michael Korns, Sr. farm.

This 1999 photograph shows the cut stone basement, and shows barred construction of the basement windows on the front of the old farmhouse on the Michael Korns, Sr. homestead in Southampton Township, Somerset County, PA. This particular window appears to have had 9 original bars, but only one remains. One of the bar holes appears to be partially covered by a repair. Note that the remaining bar was formed by hand, rather than being lathe-turned.

The nearby Daniel Korns house also has wooden bars on the basement windows. On both houses, the barred basement windows were under a full-length first story covered porch.
