Page 424 of John G. White's 1909 book "A Twentieth Century History of Mercer County, Pennsylvania, Volumn I" states:

"James M. Cleland, a lumber merchant doing an extensive business at the bustling town of Grove City, was born at Portersville, Butler county, Pennsylvania, August 14, 1836. His parents were David and Mary (McClimonds) Cleland. His father who was a farmer was born in Butler county, Pennsylvania, and the mother in Allegheny county of the same state. James M. Cleland was reared on the farm and educated at the public schools. When eighteen years of age, he was bereft of his father. He was the eldest son of the family and remained at home on the farm, at the head of affairs until the Civil war broke out. June 28, 1861first year of the warhe enlisted in Company D, Eleventh Pennsylvania Regiment of Volunteers (Reserves), which body of troops was mustered into the Union army as the Fortieth Regiment. He served in defense of his country's flag for three years and was mustered out in July, 1864, having participated in many fierce battles. He is now a member of the Grand Army of the Republic, Marion Craig Post No. 325.

After his return from the war, he went to the old farm again and there remained some fourteen years, and then moved to Grove City, in 1884, where there was better school advantages for his children. Soon afterward, entering the employ of D. G. Courtney, lumberman he was employed by him for thirteen years, buying and selling lumber and timber, staves and railroad ties. In 1897, he bought a lumber business, since which time, he was in the business alone, up to 1902, when he took as his partner, his son H. W. Cleland.

In his religion, James M. Cleland adheres to the church faith of the Presbyterian denomination. In politics, he is a supporter of the Republican party. He was married in 1868, to Sarah A. Turk, who died in 1888, leaving three childrenMary L. (deceased), Sarah L., Harry W.

From boyhood through to today, Mr. Cleland's career has been fraught with many a conflict, yet he has kept on in that noble-minded manner that becomes a true life. Whether on the homestead assisting to care for the remainder of the father's family, or in the thickest of the fight, during that terrible Civil war struggle, he was ever the same cool, calculating character."

A period map that I saw on the Grove City Historical Society website shows that Cleland lumber was located at the intersection of Erie and Grant streets. The building was located at latitude 41.161872, longitude -80.08824, where Ata Martial Arts Academy is now (2012) located.
