David Cleeland's sons in the US Civil War

 

The genealogy of David Cleeland is found in History of Butler County Pennsylvania (Chicago: Waterman, Watkins, & Co., 1883):

 

David CLEELAND was born in this county, and after remaining with his father upon the farm until his twenty-first year, he purchased a farm in this township, and began life for himself in 1833. His father was a native of Ireland . Mr. CLEELAND married Mary M. MCCLYMONDS, sister of John and James MCCLYMONDS, of this township, and of Samuel of Butler. Nine children were born to them, five of whom are living. James enlisted in 1861, under ----, Company D, Eleventh Reserves, Pennsylvania Volunteers, and served three years. Addison was a member of Company C, One Hundredth Regiment Pennsylvania Volunteers. After serving faithfully as a soldier for one year, he died near Falmouth River , Virginia , of pneumonia, induced by exposure while at his post of duty. William J. belonged to Capt. MCCOOMBS' company, of Newcastle . He enlisted for three months, and at the expiration of that time he re-enlisted for a year. Mr. David CLEELAND died in 1859. Thomas J. CLEELAND has charge of the old farm.

 

Note: James, Addison, and William J. were 2nd paternal cousins of brothers William Morrison and Arthur Kelty Cleeland.  Their fathers lived on adjacent parcels of land in Muddy Creek Township in Butler County , PA for decades.

Note: The three sons of David Cleeland in the Civil the name Cleeland in the records is spelled Cleland.

ADDISON CLELAND was a resident of Butler County , Pennsylvania . He was a member of Company C, One Hundredth Regiment Pennsylvania Volunteers ("Roundheads").  He enlisted as a private August 31, 1861, promoted to full sergeant Nov 13, 1862 and died Feb 5, 1863 of disease in Falmouth , VA.  His service record shows he was born 19 May 1840.

   He is buried at Portersville Bible Church Cemetery[i] at Muddy Creek Township , Butler County , Pennsylvania in a family plot, which grouping includes his parents and four of his siblings:

Mrs. Mary Cleland, his mother, never petitioned the federal government for a pension, which she would have been more than entitled.

JAMES MCCLYMONDS CLELAND was a member of Company D, 11 Regiment Reserve Infantry (40th Volunteers).  He enlisted July 29, 1861 at Ebensburg, Cambria County , Pennsylvania and mustered in the same date.  He was promoted to sergeant April 10, 1863, and mustered out June 13, 1864, with the regiment .His age at enrollment was 25.

 

 James is enumerated in 1890 Veterans Schedules in Grove City , Mercer County , Pennsylvania .  His post-office box was Grove City , Pennsylvania .

 

James McClymonds Cleland has an obituary in Butler Citizen, Butler , Pa , Saturday, 20 June 1914:

James M. Cleeland died at his residence on Friday, June 12, in the 79th year of his age.  Death was caused by the infirmities of old age.  He was born at Portersville, Butler County , August 4, 1836, and was the son of David and Mary Cleeland.  He was reared on a farm and was educated in the public schools.  His father died when James was 18 years old.  On June 28, 1861, the first year of the war he enlisted in Co. D, 11th Pennsylvania Volunteers, which body of troops was mustered into the army as the 40th Regiment.  He served three years and mustered out in 1864, having taken part in many battles.  He was a member of Marion Craig Post No. 325.

  After his return from war, he went to his old home and after a short stay, he moved to Harrisville, from which place he moved to Grove City in 1884.

  He was married in 1868 to Miss Turk, who died in 1888, leaving three children Mary L., deceased; Sarah L., and Harry W.

  He was a member of the Presbyterian Church and a Republican in politics. --Grove City Reporter.

 

A 2nd obituary appeared in the Butler Eagle, Butler , Pa. , June 20, 1914, which contains the same identical information as above, but worded differently.

In 1884 he moved to Grove City , PA where he became employed by D. G. Courtney, where he bought and sold lumber and timber, staves, and railroad ties.  In 1897 he bought a lumber business in Grove City .  His wife Sarah A. Turk was born 28 April 2 1832 and died August, 1888.

 

 The burial place of James M. Cleeland is SECTION K in Woodland Cemetery which is located in Pine Township , Mercer County , Pennsylvania (near Grove City ).

WILLIAM J. CLELAND enlisted first in Company E, 55th Regiment Militia Infantry of Pennsylvania. This regiment was organized in Pittsburg , June 27, 1863. The whole regiment mustered out August 26, 1863.  Next he re-upped on September 1, 1864 at the age of 18 in Company Battery A, 6th Heavy Artillery Regiment of Pennsylvania. He mustered out June 13, 1865 at Fort Ethan , Virginia .

 

 William J. Cleland has a biographical sketch appearing in 1895 History of Butler County , Pennsylvania :

 

William J. Cleeland, fourth son of David and Mary M. (McClymonds) Cleeland, was born upon the homestead farm in Muddy Creek Township , Butler County , March 27, 1846, and received a common school education.  He was reared a farmer and resided with his parents until his enlistment in the Fifty-second Pennsylvania Militia*, Captain Christie's Company, in which he served two months.  In 1864 he enlisted in Company A, Sixth Pennsylvania Artillery, and served until the close of the war.  He was subsequently engaged in various occupations until he purchased his present farm of eighty acres, and is now making a specialty of fruit growing.  He was married in 1868 to Sarah J. Fisher, a daughter of Samuel Fisher of Lawrence County . Five children are the fruits of this union, viz.: Addison, Mary, Ira, James, and Roy.  Mr. Cleeland is a Republican in politics and is a member of the United Presbyterian Church of Portersville.  He is connected with Watson Brothers Post, G. A. R., and also with the A. O. U. W.

  

William Cleland is enumerated in 1890 Veterans Schedules in Portersville, Butler County , Pennsylvania[ii].  His post-office address was Portersville , Pennsylvania . The notation injury to knee occurs.

 

William J. Cleeland has a date of application as 17 September 1891 for an invalid pension, whereas he applied for a Civil War Pension.  His application no. is 1065065 and certificate no. is 821479.  Sarah J., the widow has a filing date on the card is illegible.  Her application no. is 725674 and certificate no. is 51686

 

The death notice of William J. Cleeland is found in:: The Butler Citizen, Butler , Pa. , Thursday, 12 July 1900:

CLELAND -- At his home in Muddy Creek Township , June 22, 1900.  William J. Cleland aged 54 years.
