Example of a hay knife

The hay knife photo above is from my personal collection, and has no known connection to Somerset County, PA. It is included here simply to show our readers what an old-time hay knife looks like.

In the days before the common use of hay bales, hay knives were used to cut loose (un-baled) hay and straw from the mow of the barn. My father, Roy E. Dietle, used one of these in his father's Somerset County, PA farm when he was a boy.
