Samuel S. Baer, Warren's Mill Road

The following picture shows Ralph and Margaret (Hahn) Dietle standing in front of the rural home of Sam Baer, on Warren's Mill Road in Somerset County, Pennsylvania. I don't know if the picture was taken before or after Sam died in 1965. The only time I was ever in the house was after Sam died and his daughter Margaret (Baer) Ackerman and her husband were living there. Most of what I know about Sam Baer is from things my father Roy E. Dietle told me:

  • Sam had a feed store.
  • Roy used to bicycle to Sam's store to watch movies that were projected onto a sheet.
  • When Roy was a youngster living on his father's farm, their corn was cut, shocked, and husked by hand, then taken to Sam Baer’s feed mill to be ground into cattle feed, cob and all.

    The Samuel S. Baer house.

  • When Roy attended the White Oak picnic as a youth, Sam Baer brought a big sliding board to the picnic every year for the kids to play on.
