The following article is from the May, 1966 issue of the Laurel Messenger. It describes the origin of Pennsylvania's first official statewide map. In 1816 the legislature ordered systematic county surveys. Those surveys (at 2-1/2 miles to the inch) were given to the Secretary of State, who hired Philadelphia mapmaker John Melish to use the surveys to compile a single state map at 5 miles to the inch. Melish published the resulting map in 1822.
