Cook School, Southampton Township, Somerset County, PA

The following photos show a pre-1917 picture postcard of the Cook School of Southampton Township, Somerset County, Pennsylvania. The photos were provided by Cook descendant Lisa Mathews Frazier. Lisa identified J. J. Cook as Jesse J. Cook, who died in December of 1916. He is buried in the Cook Cemetery. Click here for a full resolution copy of the schoolhouse image. Click here for a 1915 map that shows the location of the school.

Although the steps in the photo are made from wood, Michael McKenzie told me about some cement steps that are located about where the school is shown on the 1915 map. When I asked Lisa Mathews Frazier whether she knew if the cement steps are from the school, she replied, "Yes, they are from the same school! They must have done an update at some point, because my grandmother pointed out the cement steps to me years ago and said they were to the school she attended. Then my mom and I used to drive by to see the steps when we went to the cemetery."
