Early Swegers in Bedford County, Pennsylvania

Introduction: Although it appears that the gunsmith William Sweger was raised in Perry County, I have listed the early Swegers in Bedford County, wondering if long distance family relationships may have helped a Perry County youth obtain a Bedford County apprenticeship. Please do not misinterpret such musings as facts.

1773: The following excerpt from the 1884 book "History of Bedford, Somerset and Fulton Counties, Pennsylvania" indicates there was a Swaggard living near the present-day bounds of Bedford County in 1773:

1790: In the Bedford County section of the book "Heads of Families First Census of the United States: 1790 State of Pennsylvania" (46 MB), there are four Swaggers households: Hendrey, John, Leonard, and William.

1796: The following excerpt from the 1884 book indicates there were Swagers in Bedford Township in 1796.

1800: William Swager, Leonard Swigert, and John Swager households are listed in a The Bedford and St. Clair townships portion of the 1800 manuscript census records of Bedford County, Pennsylvania.

1810: In a transcript of the 1810 census of Bedford County, a William Swager household is listed in Bedford township and an Abraham Swagert household is listed in Hopewell Township.

1820: In a transcript of the Bedford Township and the Bedford Borough portions of the 1820 census records of Bedford County, Pennsylvania that I reviewed, an Isaac Swager household and a William Swagger household are listed.

1830: In a transcript of the Bedford Township and Bedford Borough portions of the 1830 census records of Bedford County, Pennsylvania that I reviewed, a John Swager household and a William Swagger household are listed.

1840: I did not find any Sweger households in the 1840 census of Bedford County, Pennsylvania.
