Introduction: Valentine Schroeder is known as a Bedford County gunsmith from an 1843 newspaper advertisement.
1840: I did not find Valentine Schroeder in a transcript of the 1840 census of Bedford County, Pennsylvania.
1843: The 2001 book "Gunsmiths of Bedford, Fulton, Huntingdon, & Somerset Counties" indicates that Valentine Schroeder advertised in the June 30, 1843 "Bedford Gazette" that he had a shop in what is now Osterburg, Bedford County to perform metal work, including making and repairing firearms. Back then, what is now the village of Osterburg was known as Buckstown. Osterburg is 12 miles north of the town of Bedford, approximately at 40.169444,-78.520278.
1847: The 2001 book also indicates that a Valentine Schroeder had a gun shop in Baltimore, Maryland in 1847 that was located on 82 Henrietta Street.
1855: The following item is from "Matchett's Baltimore Directory For 1855-56" and has Valentine Schroeder on 76 Henrietta:
