Michael Engle of Elk Lick Township, Somerset County, Pennsylvania

Introduction: This web page is my attempt at tracing what happened to Michael Engle who for a short while lived next to his brother Clemens Engle in Elk Lick Township of what is now Somerset County. The following excerpt from the W.P.A. warrant survey map of Elk Lick township shows where Clemens and Michael lived relative to the present-day town of Salisbury, Pennsylvania. They settled just west of the Allegheny Mountain, on adjacent properties. Michael Engle's property was a part of Clemens Engle's original 1786 survey (Book C-60 page 75). Clemens and Michael were cousins of the gunsmith Peter Engle of Maryland and western Pennsylvania.

1789: The following composite image is from the "Pennsylvania Archives", Series 6, Volume III. This is the earliest record I have found putting Michael Engle in Bedford County, Pennsylvania. The list was recorded by John Burger.

1790: The following composite image is from the Bedford County portion of the 1908 book "Heads of Families First Census of the United States: 1790 State of Pennsylvania" (46 MB). Michael and Clemens lived on adjacent properties, and the shape of the properties suggests that Michael purchased his property from Clemens.

1794: The following entry in Doctor Wellford's Whiskey Insurrection-related journal covers his November 26, 1794 trip from the present-day location of Ursina to Salisbury. It states, "Wednesday, 26th. After sleeping in the Dutchmans kitchen We rode to Grundy's, 14 miles, to breakfast, & afterwards to Michael Ingles, 5 miles, making 19 miles this day." This shows that Michael Engle was still living a short distance east of the present-day site of Salisbury, Pennsylvania in 1794.

1796: In 1796 Clemens and Michael Angle appear as taxables in Elk Lick township, which was formed circa 1785 from what had been Brothersvalley Township. This is the last reference to Michael Engle in Pennsylvania I've found so far. For the 1796 tax list, see the February 1984 issue of the Laurel Messenger.

Tracing Michael Engle in Ohio: The website of the village of Covington, Kentucky has a photo of Michael Ingle's tombstone at the Highland Cemetery (40.12975101, -84.35344929) in Miami County, Ohio, and also has a photo of the Michael Ingle historical marker at the cemetery. The historical marker states that Michael is from Virginia, but the village website says that additional research has shown that Michael Ingle came to Ohio from Bedford County, Pennsylvania.

A web page about Michael Ingle indicates that he died in 1838, was born in Frederick County, Maryland, and married his first wife Catherine Swartzel in Pennsylvania in 1780. A web page about Catherine Swartzel indicates she was the daughter of Mathias Swartzel of Brothersvalley Township, and the brother of the Mathias Swartzel who married Susannah Coleman. A Mathias Swatsel appears in the 1796 Elk Lick Township assessment (Laurel Messenger, Feb. 1984), and a Mathias Swartzel is mentioned as a son-in-law in the 1805 estate of George Coleman of Brothersvalley Township (Laurel Messenger, Nov. 1975).

The following excerpt is from the Jackson Township portion of the 1882 book "History of Montgomery County, Ohio". It is not clear to me if it describes Mathias Swartzel junior or senior moving to Montgomery County. As will be shown below, Michael Engle reportedly moved to Montgomery County before moving to Miami County.

The following excerpt is from the German Township portion of the 1882 book "History of Montgomery County, Ohio". It is not clear to me if it describes Mathias Swartzel junior or senior moving to Montgomery County.

The following excerpt is from the Newberry Township portion of the 1880 book "History of Miami County, Ohio". It reports that Michael Ingle previously lived in Montgomery County, Ohio.

The following excerpt is from the Butler Township portion of the 1882 book "History of Montgomery County, Ohio". It indicates that Michael Engle was an early settler of Montgomery County, Ohio.

The following excerpt from the 1909 book "Centennial History Troy, Piqua and Miami County, Ohio" also mentions Michael Engle.
