This photograph by my sister duplicates one that I took, but the lighting is different, which highlights the hewing marks on the sill plate timber (if sill plate is the right term). This is one of a number of timbers that appear to have been hewed, and then possibly sawn or planed, or smoothed by some other method. I annotated this photograph to point out a number of interesting construction features.
