I don’t have many photos of the stone springhouse on the Somerset County, Pennsylvania farm of my Dietle grandparents Irvin & Alma (Miller) Dietle, but I found the following image on an old home movie today. The four-bay porch of the farmhouse is on the right, and the springhouse is farther away, on the left. The springhouse was the only source of water for the farmhouse and held a spring-fed water trough to keep foodstuff cool. In my day, an electric pump brought water from the springhouse to the farmhouse. That’s uncle Ralph (left) and uncle Bud (right) in the foreground, chatting over the fence. L. Dietle, Dec. 21, 2024.

The children playing at the beginning of the movie are Kimberly Dietle (blue sailor-theme dress), Dana Dietle (long pants) and Donna Saylor (striped dress). The people walking away from the house are Irving Saylor, Jr. (white shirt, holding sports coat), Irving Saylor, Sr. (wearing sports coat), Julia (Dietle) Saylor (orange dress), Linda Saylor (holding box), Jerry Saylor (wearing tie). At the fence Luther “Bud” Dietle is waving, and Ralph Dietle is facing away from the camera.
