The foot adz shown above is from one of the buildings on the Southampton Township, Somerset County, PA farm that was previously owned by Allen Korns. My guess would be that the adz probably dates back to Allen's father John Wilson Korns, and possibly even earlier. The new sharpening job and handle were added around the date of the photo, in order that the present owner of the farm, and his son (my uncle and cousin), could build a traditional maple sugar trough from a log. My cousin remembers this adz head hanging in the shed beside the hand-cranked drill press when he was little.
