The following image of a post card was provided by Cumberland Road historian Steve Colby. The misleading caption on the postcard has caused people who have seen it to think that Devil's Backbone was a formation that was located in the Narrows above Cumberland. It was actually located at Corriganville, north of Cumberland, but was quarried away many years ago. A formation at the Narrows has the same strata, and appears somewhat similar, but the strata lean in the opposite direction from Devil's Backbone.
The 2009 photo below shows a formation at the Narrows that various people have mistakenly believed was Devil's Backbone. The photo was provided by Steve Colby, and was taken near the utility building just past the used car lot in Locust Grove. To see photographs of the actual Devil's Backbone formation, click here.
