The auger photo above is from my personal collection, and has no known connection to Somerset County, Pennsylvania. It is included here simply to show our readers what an old-time auger looks like.
During building construction, augers like this were used for boring holes in wooden beams to permit the beams to be pinned together with wooden pins.
