The two pages reproduced below are a section titled "Early American agricultural communities" from the 1922 book "Rural Sociology" by J. M. Gillette. These pages provide a brief description of American farm life in the first third of the nineteenth century (i.e. 1800-1833). As such, they give a fair description of rural life as Michael Korn and his family and neighbors probably would have experienced it. One statement on page 37 raises a question though, and that is whether or not home canning was actually performed in the 1800-1833 time period (I suspect that it was not, but I am not certain).
