Joseph H. Korns Obituary

Joseph H. Korns, a son of Daniel Korns, Junior, is buried at the Pennsville Independent Cemetery in Fayette County, Pennsylvania. His tombstone indicates he was born in 1846 and died in 1909. Here is the text of his obituary:

Joseph H. Korns
After a several months' illness Joseph H. Korns, a prominent retired farmer of Fayette County, died last night at midnight at his late home on the old Claire farm near Wooddale. Death was due to complication of diseases.

Mr. Korns was aged about 61 years and was born and reared near Wellersburg, Somerset county. When a young man he learned the trade of a stone mason and later gave up his trade to engage in farming which occupation he followed up until about two years ago when he retired from active work owing to his poor health. He was married to Miss Elizabeth Clair, a well known young woman of Wooddale. No children were born to the union.

About 24 years ago he moved from Somerset to the old Claire homestead near Wooddale where he resided up until the time of his death. He was widely known throughout Somerset and Fayette counties. Mr. Korns was a member of the Reformed Church of Scottdale. In addition to his widow he is survived by three brothers and two sisters; Mrs. Lydia Weisel of Pittsburg, Miss Matilda Blubaugh, Jacob and Wilson Korns of Somerset county, and Emanuel Korns of near Scottdale.

The funeral of the late Joseph H. Korns will take place from his late home near Wooddale Sunday morning at 10 o'clock. Interment in the Baptist cemetery at Mt. Olive.

Page 6 of Roger and Mona Huffman's 2007 book "A Look At Southampton Township Pennsylvania", Volume II indicates that Joseph Korns of Scottsdale died on March 11, 1909. The information was credited to clippings collected by Charles Burkett and Stella (Emerick) Shroyer.

I typed the above transcript from a poor-quality copy of the original news clipping. Click here for something sent to me by Andy Petenbrink that makes me suspect the clipping may be from the March 18, 1909 issue of the Connellsville "Daily Courier" newspaper.

Joseph Korns is listed on page 82 of the 1949 book "The Genealogy of Michael Korns, Sr. of Somerset County Pennsylvania" as the son of Daniel Korns, Jr. In that book, Joseph's wife is listed as "Elizabeth Blair", and it is said that Joseph and Elizabeth had no children. Obviously, the name "Blair" is a misprint in that book and should have been "Clair" or "Claire".
