The second image above shows what Jacob Korns wrote on the back of his discharge paper. both images were provided by Jacob’s descendant Fred Stickle, who grew up in Iowa but no longer lives there.
In one e-mail Fred wrote “My grandmother was Jean Korns. Her father was Jacob Korns. He was born in Millersburg Ohio and moved to Iowa to buy land and set up farming. He was in the war between the states. I have his discharge papers where he served with other Iowans and was discharged for health reasons while serving in Memphis, Tenn. All his children were girls and so the Korns name was not carried on. “
In another e-mail, Fred wrote “My grandmother on my father's side was Jean Korns Stickle. Her father's name was Jacob Korns who lived in Grinnell. I have the discharge Paper from the Civil War he received. It states that he was from Millersburg, Ohio.”
The discharge paper reads (as well as I can make out) “To all whom it may concern: Know ye, That Jacob C. Korns a Private of Captain James K. Tiltons Company, (B) 46th Regiment of Ioway VOLUNTEERS who was enrolled on the 1_th day of May one thousand eight hundred and Sixty four to serve 100 days [years] or the duration of the war, is hereby Discharged from the service of the United States this Twenty Third day of September, 1864 at Davenport, Ioway by reason of __________ (No objection to his being reenlisted is known to exist.)
