Allen Korns' house and tractor.

Allen Korns' house & tractor

The background of this photograph shows the Southampton Township, Somerset PA family farm house of Allen Lester Korns. The boy on the tractor is Allen's youngest son, who was born in the spring of 1946. He looks to be two years old in the picture, so the picture probably dates from 1948.

Looking at the house, we can see that the two upstairs windows are already boarded up, and the west end of the the porch on the north side of the house has not yet been closed in for additional living space. In earlier photos, the window trim is painted a dark color, but by the time of this photo the trim is painted white.

The shed right in front of the house was already gone as far back as I can remember, which means that it was already gone circa 1957.

The little tractor was a Ford or a Massey-Furgeson (they had two). They were wonderful little tractors that could do far more than their small size suggested. One of this pair of tractors was the first I ever drove, sitting on my uncle's lap when I was about four or five years old. (By the time I was six, in Mercer County, I was driving an Allis-Chalmers tractor with a hay bailer and wagon on behind for 25 cents an hour, to free up an adult to stack hay on the wagon.)
