Bathroom in the Korns family farmhouse

This 2008 photo shows the bathroom in the currently uninhabited 19th century Southampton Township, Somerset County family farmhouse that belonged to Daniel Korns, Jr., then to John Wilson Korns, then to Allen Korns. This area did not contain a toilet. The toilet was in a small closet-like area leading to the attic stairs. The room was at the east end of the house, over the kitchen. It was heated by a register that opened into the room below, and (if I remember correctly) by an electric space heater.

As a little kid in the 1950's, the thrill of taking a bath here was that there were tub toys--something I didn't have at home.

It bears mentioning that during Allen Korn's lifetime, not everyone in the area had "indoor plumbing". I knew respectable people in the area who, as late as the 1960's, only had an outhouse. In 2009 Uncle Melvin said that that Pappy added inside plumbing after they got electricity, which he reports was circa 1941. He remembers Pappy ("dad" to him) going to purchase the pump.
