The following image was provided by Mike McKenzie. It is a 1938 map of the Barrelville area, and shows the branch railroad heading northward through Barrelville. The map suggests that in 1938 the branch railroad did not extend to Wellersburg, Pa, and instead terminated near Barrelville.
The map shows the trestle that crossed Jennings Run and the east-west road that was the antecedent to the present-day (2009) Route 39 (The present-day road is in a different location). It also shows the junction between the branch railroad and the Cumberland and Pennsylvania Railroad. The map has been rotated so that north is at the top of the page.
The following 1939 USDA aerial photo of the Barrelville area shows the location of the branch railroad and trestle that is pictured above. The linear structure that is visible east of the trestle, between the east-west road and Jennings Run, is depicted on the 1938 map that is included above. Mike reported the following items. The old road and present-day Route 36 do not line up in most places from Corriganville to west of Barrelville. At some point, the road was redone extensively and the creek bed was even moved. The road used to go directly in front of Frank Caler's store in Barrelville, and past a huge rock that lies at the intersection that was known as the "Death Rock". Many people crashed into that rock until the road was moved away from it. Click here to see a 2009 photo of Death Rock, and the railroad cut behind it.
There was a foot bridge on the west side of the trestle. There was a road east of the trestle that can still be observed there today (2009) but it is growing up. Coal was brought down this road and sold at a location near Route 36, there was a small office there and possibly a scale, the old metal office building is still there today (2009). This old road may be one of the north-south oriented scars seen east of the trestle on the photo below.
The following image was provided by Mike McKenzie. It is an undated map of the Barrelville, Maryland area that has been rotated so that north is oriented torward the top of the page. The map shows the branch line heading northward through Barrelville. According to the map, this branch was known as the "Jennings Run & Wellersburg Railroad" at the time the map was made. This map also shows the trestle that crossed Jennings Run and the east-west road that was the antecedent to today's Route 39.
